Founded in 2020, Kappy Design prides itself on a minimalistic design ethos – effortless everyday styles and easy-to-wear silhouettes. Laying on a firm foundation of relaxed fits and timeless workwear shapes, the genderless brand aims to make comfortable styles that fit into your daily routine with ease.
Balancing bold block colours and neutral tones, Kappy Design’s versatile palette is a nuanced blend of adventurous and understated. We spoke to the brand about their current collection, finding conceptual balance, sustainability, and more.
Thanks for sitting down with us! What would you say makes Kappy Design stand out from the crowd?
Our products are simple and faithful to the basics, we pursue a minimal design. Our keywords are 'sizeless, genderless and timeless', our goal is to make products that are comfortable and stylish for everyone – this is the core value of our brand.
Talk us through your process of finding the perfect balance between outdoor and daily wear.
We like nature, camping, hiking, and travelling. On weekends, I always wanted to be in nature, but I had a lot of questions about having to buy clothes for both the outdoors and the city. I was worried that anyone who likes outdoor activities but enjoys a more comfortable and soft mood would like clothes that border between outdoor and daily wear – this concern was the beginning of KAPPY DESIGN.
Talk us through a key design element from the collection that excites you?
Pigment dyeing and vintage colours. As we pursue minimal and timeless designs, it results in a lot of products that use washing or vintage colours. These days, we are trying pigment washing that makes the texture of the product stand out more by diversifying the materials.
Talk us through the key cuts, silhouettes and fabrics that make up the collection.
It’s a combination of loose-fit cotton shirts and wide-fit denim pants produced with recycled fabric. The comfortable and loose silhouette explains our concept well. Our recycled denim is produced by recycling existing and discarded denim materials, a process that considers both the environment and quality.
Our relaxed fit cotton shirt is a good product to wear for a long time with its soft texture and excellent durability using high-density cotton.
If there was a magazine documenting the ‘Kappy lifestyle’, what would it be called and who would grace the front cover?
I think it would be better for customers who like our clothes to show their normal daily lives rather than famous people. We always want to be comfortable and approach our customers like friends.
You mentioned that you wanted to make clothes that people wear 'again and again'. What are your thoughts on the current industry approach to sustainability?
Currently, the fashion industry is indiscriminately producing products according to size and gender. We continue to produce for consumption in a simple structure where resources are collected, produced, and discarded when there is no need. I think it is most important to avoid reckless consumption and production – and to use good products for a long time.
Our clothes can be worn by the whole family, it is durable even if worn for a long time due to the high-quality and easy-to-manage materials. Also, we do not produce more products than is necessary.
In the long run, we want to move toward a circular structure that can efficiently use and regenerate resources, not a structure that is unilaterally consumed. Packaging also reduces the use of plastic and tries to use recyclable organic material. There are still many things to improve, but we will always think and try for sustainable fashion.
What are you looking forward to at Pitti?
As a small and fresh brand, I'm happy and very excited just to participate. The reason why we participate in PITTI UOMO is to meet partners who can promote us more and inform customers of our products. Aside from sales, the goal is to meet a partner who can continue various collaborations in the long term and maintain a steady relationship.
Who would be your dream collaboration and why?
If we had a chance to collabo with New Balance or Patagonia, that would be awesome! New Balance is a brand that goes well with our comfortable mood, and we actually wear it the most when we shoot lookbooks. In addition, I understand that they are constantly considering sustainability, and that is similar to our mindset. Also, I hope to collaborate with the keyword of 'sustainability' – I sympathise with Patagonia's brand direction and get a lot of inspiration.
What's next for the brand?
Above all, I want the brand to become an icon that covers outdoor and daily wear and sits in people's minds. If you think about sports shoes, which brand comes to mind? Maybe Nike, Adidas etc? If people think about pigment dyeing and wide pants, hopefully, they are reminded of KAPPY DESIGN.
We want to maintain our own concept steadily without being swept away by short-term trends. After 10, 30 years, I want to show everyone a cool and comfortable product without losing my original intention.
Thanks for your time!
