For its SS23 collection, North Sails teams up with Italian car manufacturer Maserati for an exclusive capsule collection. We spoke to Brand and Communication Manager Valentina Mariani about the upcoming collab, its operations for the health of the planet, colourways within the new collection, and more.
Please tell us more about why you decided to collaborate with Maserati?
This collaboration sees two titans merge the land and sea, showcasing the possibilities of challenging perceptions and defining new horizons- an exclusive capsule collection in the name of responsible solutions.
What is the key concept behind the collaboration?
We collaborated with Maserati because the two businesses have a long history of using advanced engineering to develop high performing products on and off the water. With this capsule collection, Maserati and North Sails Apparel present a selection of products designed around shared values of exclusivity, responsibility and performance.
Tell us more about the capsule collection with Coral Gardeners – what did they bring to the table in terms of the design process and concept?
The collection is made of polos, t-shirts, swimwear and accessories for men, women and kids making up approximately 25 pieces. We have selected bright colours, patterns and graphic patterns which come from the Coral Reef. Coral Gardeners work with organisations that are aligned with their values, so we are so happy to have partnered with them. We are an ocean positive brand which uses only sustainable materials and adopts the most responsible manufacturing process possible. The capsule collections are produced in accordance with the best sustainable standards of North Sails Apparel. Coral Gardeners had the chance to be involved in the design and decisions regarding the production of the collections.
Can you tell us about your plans in terms of making changes to your products and operations for the health of the planet?
We are aware of the impact that clothing has on our planet. We are committed to reducing this impact through our products through continuous research by finding alternative and innovative materials and fibres for our collections and by using the most responsible manufacturing process.
Can you tell us more about the North Sails ‘lifestyle’?
North Sails is a story of passion tracking back to 1957 when the American engineer, sailor and Olympic gold medalist Lowell North decided to realise his dream: to manufacture the fastest racing sails in the world. The same grit and innovative spirit have been transmitted to the apparel collection: a wave of clothing and accessories for men, women and kids who shared his passion for the sea, suitable for navigating choppy waters or busy city streets. Discovery, innovation and the strong bond with the ocean drive the North Sails brand aesthetic and ethical vision.
As sailors, surfers and ocean lovers, we know how important healthy waters are to our livelihoods and for future generations. The ocean is what keeps us in business. To protect it, we evolve our products to minimise waste and reduce pollution, and we use our voice to advocate for healthier seas.
What do you think makes the North Sails brand unique?
North Sails has authentic roots in the sailing world and its commitment to ocean conservation is a part of its unique DNA. Our strong bond to the ocean has always driven our aesthetic and ethical vision. We don’t just want to speak about taking care of the oceans, we are fully committed to supporting its regeneration through planting super corals. By 2050 the corals may be the first ecosystem that may disappear and with them, 25% of the marine world would be dramatically affected.
What inspired the colourways for the collection?
The colours of coral reefs and the ocean are the inspiration behind the collection.

What's next for the brand?
At North Sails Apparel, we are on our journey to becoming known as an Ocean Positive brand. We will be the brand that gives a voice to the ocean whilst working tirelessly in the pursuit of ocean regeneration and protection. We will then work on reducing the impact that clothing has on our planet by finding alternative and innovative materials for our collections and by using the most responsible manufacturing process. We will also commit to supporting projects and ambassadors that focus on conserving the ocean’s biodiversity and ecosystems.
