French designer Pierre-Louis Mascia is adept at fusing contrasting patterns and colours, resulting in a fresh, modern take on vintage chic. A trained illustrator, Mascia launched his brand in 2007. His ties to the art world translate to the brand - creating pieces akin to wearable art, with an effortless visual poetry infused in the palettes, patterns and cuts.
Punctuated by flowing silhouettes, the brand exudes relaxed luxury. Its upcoming collection features a sportswear line inspired by the elegance of the 50s and a collab with Diadora. We spoke to Brand Founder and Designer Pierre-Louis Mascia about the inspiration behind the new collection, his dream collab, how it is updating a classic Diadora silhouette, and more.
The new capsule sounds exciting, please tell us more about the concept behind the collection.
The concept of the PLM Vizir capsule is a sportswear line consisting of tracksuits, joggers, shorts, bucket hats, t-shirts, leggings, scarves and windbreakers. Vizir embodies an idealised vision of sportswear: where elegance and creativity meet comfort and technique. It is inspired by dancers and music, whose emblematic characters are Fred Astaire and Yma Sumac. The elegance of the 50s splashes through this capsule. The place where the Vizir outfits take on their full dimension are clubs. This capsule is accompanied by a pair of sneakers in collaboration with Diadora Heritage, we will reveal the inspiration behind this new sneaker when it is presented at PITTI.
How are you updating the Diadora sneaker?
We have revisited the Diadora sneaker from the point of view of comfort, but above all of creativity. With the Diadora Vizir, our aim is to bring culture and sport together.
This pair of sneakers are made in Italy in the Diadora factories. The materials are printed and manufactured by Achille Pinto. The idea is to merge the know-how of these two companies.
If you could conceive a collaboration in any era – 60s, 70s etc, which would it be and why?
In the 1960s and 70s, we would have loved to collaborate with Biba stores: a very important reference point for fashion trends in that period. Otherwise, the high jewellery of Cartier in the 20s and 30s.
If you had to choose somebody from pop culture, past or present, as an ambassador/muse for this collection, who would it be and why?
Obviously Yma Sumac and Fred Astaire are the ideal muses that inspired the clothes of this capsule. Transposing these artists into the present they would be Frank Ocean, Rosalia or Lady Gaga. Entertainment that makes sense – that is our vision of creation.
What inspired the colourways for the collection?
We have designed three original prints, which are a mix of archival Japanese ikats merged with 50s tie prints. Through animal, tile and geometric prints, we came up with this new concept.
Talk us through a key design element from the collection that excites you.
The sneakers in collaboration with Diadora are the heart of this capsule. The melt between our worlds and our skills is very interesting.
What are you looking forward to at PITTI?
I expect to meet with buyers and other players in the fashion industry to create unpredictable outcomes.
What's next for the brand?
We have just opened our first boutique in Milan, Via Verri. We are also working on the next SS23 collection named ‘Eternal Present’. All these new projects will be presented in early October in Milan.
