Taking a Trip Down Heritage Lane With Filson

Exhibitors Spotlight focuses on a selection of brands exhibiting at this year's Pitti Uomo, showcasing their upcoming collections and special upcoming projects.

It’s impossible to discuss quality outdoor clothing brands without mentioning Filson, the American imprint that has been perfecting the art of functional, durable outerwear for the last 124 years. Born in the Pacific Northwest back in 1897, the brand’s simple yet effect underscoring idea has ensured that both it and the clothing it creates stands the test of time: create hard-wearing products with honesty and integrity.
Filson’s strong international reputation is built on this authentic core value system; a quote from its 1914 catalogue still rings true today: "The goods we quote must not be confounded with the cheap and vastly inferior grade with which the market is over-run. Such goods are not only useless for the purpose for which they are intended, but the person wearing them would be better off without them.”

Fast forward almost one century after that quote was written and you’ll find that Filson still stands out among the myriad of other outwear brands on the market today thanks to its quality and performance, which is why it continues to attract new customers year after year. But it’s not one to rest on its laurels.

“For FW22 we have tried to take a ‘what could have been’ approach within design,” the brand explains when we sit down to discuss the new collection. The latest “designs are meant to feel like they could have been pulled from our archive and we are simply reintroducing them to a new customer. Filson has such an incredible design DNA rooted in function and durability, established over many decades of its long-tenured history , it’s easy to cherry-pick the best bits and highlight or recontextualize them.”
This season, Filson has flipped to a specific corner of its Pacific North West heritage book — forestry — and has developed a narrative that takes the wearer from “creek to cabin.” The pieces in focus are the iconic Mackinaw Cruiser, which has been done up in a number of new plaids, the new Mackinaw Wool World Jacket, Chilkoot Expedition Parka, and a range of bags including briefcases, totes, and luggage.
It’s not all about reviving beloved garments, though. Filson is also working on taking its global brand to the next level, working on a new project that will pair its impressive history with contemporary shapes and materials for a cleaner, modern take on the tried-and-tested classics. Stay tuned.
