Brand Profile
Caoimhe Dowling is a brand based in Copenhagen, Denmark which takes an interdisciplinary approach to creating clothing and textiles. The work emerging from the brand celebrates storytelling through clothing inspired by her passion for writing and her childhood on the southwest coast of Ireland. The brand takes a holistic approach towards sustainable practices and centres itself around craft heritage, emotional longevity, localism and a deep-rooted connection to nature. Inspiration comes from back-to-the-land movements in history such as 'The Kibbo Kift' and is inspired by the ideologies of the punk movement. The garments emerging from the brand are made from a combination of newly woven artisanal wool and found and repurposed deadstock materials in natural fibres. Her work aims to ‘subvert the norm’ and bring traditional craft practices into a contemporary context.
Caoimhe Dowling has forged a strong connection with artisanal weaving mill ‘Woven in the Bone’ nestled on an old industrial fishing harbour in Buckie on the northeast coast of Scotland, who creates fabric on a Hattersley loom originating from the Victorian era. Originally developed for export to the colonies in the late 19th Century, the Hattersley Domestic is a compact, semi-automated foot-treadle loom. While developments in textile manufacturing grew apace with the advances in water, steam and coal power, the Hattersley Domestic ensured pockets of production remained in remote rural settings where individuals and communities could continue to produce commercial cloth and remain on the land. The brand collaborates with ‘Woven in the Bone’ and Donegal Yarns whose products are made in Ireland with production carried out in their wool spinning mill in Kilcar, Co Donegal, Ireland. Donegal Yarns are one of the last remaining companies producing indigenous and authentic yarns in Ireland.
