Celebrating 100 Years of Paul&Shark

Exhibitors Spotlight focuses on a selection of brands exhibiting at this year's Pitti Uomo, showcasing their upcoming collections and special upcoming projects.

This year marks 100 years of Paul&Shark, the luxury leisurewear brand with a fascinating history. While the brand itself wasn’t founded until 1978 by Paolo Dini, its story began much earlier, with a chemist named Gian Ludovico Dini one century ago. Despite knowing nothing about the textile industry, Dini had heard of Maglifico Daco, a traditional knitting mill located in the small Italian town of Masnago. The mill was known for its excellent output but it was going through a rough patch, so Dini bought it and restarted the business.
It is those roots upon which Paul&Shark is built. Born from a combination of that heritage and a passion for the sea, the label’s luxury output often blends seafaring tradition with Italian style, resulting in contemporary garments that are adapted for everyday life.
For FW22, the brand says that the inspiration comes “from the great North Sea — evocative atmospheres, strong winds, uncontaminated landscapes that connect man to nature. The collection speaks of [our] values and sustainability commitment, which have been the starting point in the choice of materials and how they’ve been used.” The color palette reflects this approach, incorporating shades that evoke images of the sea, forests, and autumn leaves. The real highlight of the collection, however, is in the production — specifically, in the shift in textile dyeing. This season, Paul&Shark has introduced e.dye® Waterless Color System™, a certified system of dyeing yarns that requires 85% less water, 90% less chemicals, and results in 12% less CO2 emissions compared to traditional dyeing processes.
This season will also see the continued evolution of the much-hyped Paul&Shark and White Mountaineering collab. After the success of the previous two drops, the third wave will see the Italian brand joining forces with Japanese designer Yosuke Aizawa once more for a capsule collection that pairs military, modernity and function.
Living in harmony with nature is a motto that’s intrinsic to the Paul&Shark brand. Currently, it’s working on its RE-COTTON initiative, a recycled capsule collection crafted from yarns developed from pre-and post-consumer cotton. Through this project, the brand is continuing its attempts to lower its environmental footprint — using less water, chemicals, and CO2 thanks to the use of preexisting yarns. The company also works closely with Shark Trust, an NGO with a mission to protect the future of sharks. Paul&Shark is a corporate patron of the NGO; it has also designed a collaborative capsule collection, which features a logo designed by Shark Trust, and donates 10 percent of the proceeds directly to the trust.
