WUMAN is a contemporary womenswear/ menswear brand founded by Ekwerike Chukwuma in 2013 taking inspiration from the female form which he fell in love with during his medical studies at the University, African art and his cultural heritage. The garments created are also inspired by cross disciplinary affinities to Architecture, geometry, anatomy and poetry.
At WUMAN, garments are seen as art and storytellers and are created within moments of grace to engage the wearer who embodies and speak to its audience. WUMAN was created to foster idealogical fashion that is deeply rooted in the continent of Africa and is a tool of positive change.
The garments are beautifully made by working with local artisans within the continent of Africa.
Each garment/ look is a composition with it’s own literature in the form of a story or poetry which Chukwuma Ekwerike refers to as ‘’GARMENTRATURE’’.
WUMAN is guided by a five-point philosophy that bothers on
1) Heritage
2) Art
3) Storytelling
4) Timelessness
5) Positive Impact
The garments created by WUMAN are made for those who want not just garments that are visually appealing but ones rich in storytelling, culturally stimulating, unique and of positive impact.
WUMAN is featured as part of the selected talent invited to join the EFI Africa Accelerator [a year ago]. A continent-wide programme accelerating brands out of Africa through mentoring and development by industry experts.
The programme provides a new generation of African design talent the opportunity to engage with the international market. It seeks to equalise the playing field and bring exposure to the incredible talent that exists on the continent.
